ESPN to Reveal Madden NFL 17 Cover Athlete and First Look

With the 2016 NFL Draft concluded and E3 2016 swiftly approaching, it’s about time we heard from EA Sports in regards to its second largest sports gaming franchise, Madden

That’s right, it’s high time we learned who will be taking up the mantle as Madden NFL 17 Cover Man.  However, unlike previous years when the fans voted, EA has taken it upon themselves to choose their athlete.

This is normally where I’d announce who it is, but frankly, EA Sports is keeping it under lock and key.  All the secrecy is so they can reveal everything during ESPN’s Sportscenter Special on Thurs. May 12, 2016 at 6pm ET/3pm PT!

During the broadcast, ESPN will announce the cover athlete, most likely interview them, and show a first look at Madden NFL 17.

The announcement comes without a formal vote, like in previous years.  Perhaps EA figured it was unanimous.

While we wait, we figured we come up with our top 3 candidates.

3. J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans

Anyone who knows me is aware of how big of a Houston Texans fan I am.  So, many may think that this is a homer pick for me.  They wouldn’t be entirely wrong, but bear with me.  J.J. is pretty much the face of the NFL right now.  Plus, he’s a 3-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.  Not to mention, he’s arguably the best player in football, right now.  The man is a game-wrecker and a star so why wouldn’t they make him their cover man.  Besides, the homer pick would’ve been DeAndre Hopkins.  Love the guy but he’s not up to J.J.’s level.

2. Von Miller, OLB, Denver Broncos

Von Miller just makes complete sense.  He’s the reigning Super Bowl MVP and Champion, he just had a stint on Dancing With The Stars, and he’s just a beast on the field.  Him and his Denver Bronco Defensive Brethren systematically destroyed everyone on their way to a Super Bowl title.  The Madden Cover Athlete would just be another feather in a loaded cap.

1. Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers (Pictured Above)

Say what you want about how Cam reacted after the Super Bowl loss.  It may have been unsportmanlike, petty, or what-have-you.  Despite that, the reigning MVP of the year was the best QB in the NFL last year.  He’s got the charisma, the talent, and the following to be a great Cover Athlete.  While you may not always like him, you can’t deny the talent Newton possesses.

Who do you think should be the Cover Athlete for Madden NFL 17?
