It’s never easy going from jetpacks to boots-on-the-ground, but Sledgehammer Games made it look like it, when they released Call of Duty WWII. For just under a year, CoD fans and eSports pros have had the opportunity to grind through gritty, intense gameplay with their friends and enemies. Even though we’re just a few short months away from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 making its debut, Sledgehammer Games isn’t about to let WWII go out, without one last hurrah! That hurrah is the 4th DLC Pack, Shadow War, and it includes 3 new maps, 1 new War Mode Mission, the final chapter of Nazi Zombies, and a really cool feature that let’s everyone get in the game.
“Thematically for this pack, we wanted to push the fiction as far as we could, have a lot of fun with it, and give the player a sense of creativity as they play,” said Matt Abbott, Lead Multiplayer Environment Artist at Sledgehammer Games.
From the way that trailer looked, it appears as though Matt and his team’s vision was accomplished. The maps look suped up, the final Zombie chapter “The Frozen Zone” looks insane, and the new War Mode Mission looks out of this world. I mean, it’s not every day you see an Tesla Gun blow everything to smithereens, but that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do in the new War Mode Mission, Operation Arcane.
Operation Arcane, a new War Mode Mission that will take players deep within a secret enemy research facility in the Austrian mountains. Allied Forces players will be tasked with infiltrating this lab, stealing enemy secrets and schematics and finally destroying whatever classified technology remains in a hanger full of UFOs.
In addition to the new War Mode, CoD gamers will get to experience 3 new multiplayer maps that have the potential to be a lot of fun.
Set in a secret enemy base high in the Alps, Airship takes the battle to new heights. Fight for control of the docked zeppelin, or take your chances running along a treacherous cliff, where one slip up can lead to an unfortunate trip down the mountain that will end in a respawn.
In an Algerian mine, the enemy stockpiled priceless art and gold from their European conquests. The battle will ensue around these pillaged goods, the dunes of a tank graveyard, and rock outcroppings scattered around the map.
The enemy forces have taken hold of a French Chancellery, but they won’t expect a chaotic firefight in the middle of the night. Wrest control of the stronghold’s main courtyard, while covering your team from the flanking pathways to the map’s main area for this epic night-time brawl behind enemy lines.
For many CoD fans, the Cherry on Top of the Sundae are the epic Nazi Zombie missions. WWII’s Nazi Zombies fans have watched as Sledgehammer Games set the bar, by creating a story that was interesting, intense, and fun. The additions of David Tennant, Ving Rhames, Katheryn Winnick, and Elodie Yung have only served to make the Sledgehammer story one to remember. Now, we’re at the epic conclusion and it’s anyone’s guess what happens next.
The Frozen Zone
Acquiring the Sword of Barbarossa has not put an end to the undead threat. A darker and more powerful threat lurks in the depths of Thule. In the unfathomable depths of a lost city, our heroes are humanity’s last hope of ending the cult of Thule. Luckily, they will have a few secret weapons to help put the ancient rulers of the world to rest.
Party Up Map Access
Finally, the coolest part of this update, in my opinion, is that Activision and Sledgehammer are allowing gamers that don’t own the DLC 4 Pack or the Season Pass to still play with their friends, through in-game party. That’s not something most games would do. Most of the time, you only play if you own the DLC. I remember back in my Halo days, I didn’t own the maps so the game literally wouldn’t let me play, which was such a bummer. It’s really cool of Activision and Sledgehammer to be so inclusive, even if it is only for a limited time. From August 28 (When Shadow War releases on PS4) to October 28, Season Pass owners simply have to invite players without Shadow War into their party and they’ll get to enjoy everything the DLC has to offer.
