Steam fans will be jumping for joy to learn the news that Valve are offering thier own alternative to PC and console gaming with the announcement of the Steam Box. The Steam Box offers an exciting glimpse into the future of living room gaming, taking a bold step in a new direction.
Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.
Fans are asked to sit tight as more information regarding specs, input and the appearance of the Steam Machines is yet to come, but it was revealed there will be an array of specifications, price and performance.
Valve also announced they will be giving out 300 prototype consoles to lucky Beta Testers, which are said to be able to access amost 3,000 Steam games.
While these products are still in development, we need your help. As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open.
You can apply for Beta Testing through yout Steam account and by completing a “eligibility quest”. But hurry, the quest needs to be completed before October 25th.
This is all very exciting news for the world of gaming, the Steam Box certainly sounds like a console to be reckoned with!
