One of the best-selling games in the world is joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Today, Nintendo held a live event to premiere the latest DLC character joining Smash. It was none other than Minecraft! Not just any character, but four. Steve, Alex, Zombie, Enderman, along with their subsequent levels and trademark blocks are on their way!
Even though we know that Microsoft and Nintendo have a great working relationship, it’s still surprising that Xbox‘s hottest commodity will now be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
In a brief interview after the reveal, Mr. Sakurai discussed the challenges of bringing Minecraft to life in Smash, while throwing some fun shade at Nintendo. He stated that the graphics were simple and there was no voice needed, but that the programming was downright difficult.
“The plan for the fighter is easy to create. The graphics should also be straightforward. The motion is relatively simple, and the sound is comparable to other fighters. There are plenty of things to consider, but we don’t need to implement any voices.”
“What’s difficult, however, is the programming work required to bring the character to life. It’s a massive challenge. Plus, we have to rework all our existing stages so that blocks can be placed in them. What about bomes? We also need to consider things like those. And most importantly, how do we adjust the game balance to accommodate the new fighter? Who knows what’ll happen?”
“Making everything work well together in the game including the fighter’s physical attacks and their short reach, will be extremely hard. They’d end up being a really unusual fighter. Despite all that, it looks like we’re somehow going to be able to release the fighter. That’s why we’re showing you the reveal movie today.”
However, unlike in previous reveals, Mr. Sakurai wasn’t able to do an overview video for how the Minecraft characters will play in-game. Instead, Mr. Sakurai opted to wait a couple of days and hold his traditional preview on October 3, 2020 at 7:30am PT/10:30am ET. The preview is said to be for Steve and Alex. So, it’ll be interesting to see if Mr. Sakurai details Zombie and Enderman’s involvement, as well. Perhaps they’ll be item-based summons.
