Based after the events of Abe’s Oddysee, the new title by the name of Soulstorm will follow directly on from the defeat of the loveable protagonist’s old employer and Rupture Farms. Abe, stranded in the desert alongside 300 fellow Mudokons, will find his life and newfound freedom at risk after turning to a new mystery drink for survival.
At least for the moment, it appears safe to assume that the team’s new title will be a more intense reimagining of the 1998 release, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.
“There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell,” series creator Lorne Lanning has stated. “Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle.”
After the Abe’s Oddysee release in 1997, Oddworld inhabitants were pressured by their publishers at GT interactive to produce a new Playstation One title for the 1998 Christmas period.
They created ‘Exoddus’ in the space of nine months. You don’t need a degree in game design to realise that’s an impressive feat, truly, it’s fantastic to know they’ll have far more time to work on the project, providing fewer limitations on creative freedom.
“Abe has a long way to go and plenty more adversity ahead. Soulstorm is going to be a much heavier trip for him.” Needless to say, I can’t wait to dive straight back into the universe of Oddworld.
Oddworld: Soulstorm will hit the current gen in the latter half of 2017.
