I’m trying to keep my hopes low about this, mostly because I don’t know if my heart can take the disappointment if nothing comes of this. I’ve made it clear over the years that Darth Maul is my favorite Star Wars character and has been the primary focus of my collection for over 16 years. I have just about everything Maul related, and his story is still of great interest to me.
Thus, last year, when word came out about a canceled game focusing on Maul, I was devastated. With EA having the exclusive Star Wars gaming rights, many assumed the odds of ever seeing it be picked up again were slim. While that still might be the case, that’s not stopping Red Fly Studios from still trying to make it happen.
During a Reddit AMA over the weekend Dan Borth, the studio founder, opened up about the canceled title, as well as revealing they’re still working on it (sort of):
We are currently working on a full next gen demo of all things Maul to show to the powers that be. It’s been a lot of work on our off time.
We have been burning a candle for this game since it was killed in hopes we can get it turned back on again. IF that is to happen we need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it. Still it is completely not up to us.
Well then! This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of studios working on Star Wars pitches to EA, but this might be the first for a title we actually know about, and would have to come back from the dead. With fan support behind it, it’s possible EA will take a harder look at it, and consider working with them on it. It’s far from a sure thing, as Borth himself cautions:
I don’t know what are chances are realistically. I would say this helps them if there were any.
Hopefully EA will see the value in us reskinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars if they are not interested in maul.
Still, the fact that they’re working on a pitch/demo has sparked a fevor online with fans eager to see Darth Maul get his due in gaming form, with the hashtag, #WeWantMaul, popping up as well in an attempt to get EA to pay attention. Hopefully they do. What do you guys think? Are you hoping to see this game revived?
