DriveClub is Sony’s racing title that was set to release with the PlayStation 4 next month. It was not only a launch title, but it was also going to be free for PlayStation Plus members. So in other words, the game was a marketing step for PS4 in general, and much like Watch Dogs, we won’t be seeing it this year.
Rumors were started a few days ago when un-official reports were saying the game will be delayed. Sony denied the rumors, until early today when the confirmed that it was indeed true.
“SCE Worldwide Studios and the team at Evolution Studios have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Driveclub and Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition until early 2014,” wrote Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida.
The reason for the delay seems to be to polish the title for its community driven features. Possibly features that had intertwined with the main idea of the PS4 community.
PS Plus members will still get the game for free when it releases early next year. To replace the title during launch, Sony has included the game “Contrast” in the instant game collection.
“This decision also affects PlayStation Plus members’ Instant Game Collection for launch. To be clear, Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition will still be part of the Instant Game Collection when it is released. For the PS4 launch, in addition to Resogun, I’m pleased to announce that Contrast, the highly anticipated game from Compulsion Games will also be available to PlayStation Plus members for free as part of Instant Game Collection,” said Yoshida.
Between this and Watch Dogs being delayed, Sony may have finally slip up their weakness. It may be time for them to weather a storm, similar to the heat that Microsoft has been taking for their decisions as of late. As of now, a good majority of PS4’s launch line up consists of shooters.
