Square Enix retains certain IPs like Just Cause, Life is Strange

Square Enix clarified how the publisher will be operating moving forward from a $300 million sale of studios and IPs this week.

The company said in a press release on Monday that “overseas studios will continue to
publish franchises such as JUST CAUSE, OUTRIDERS, and Life is Strange.”

Development by Square Enix will now be comprised of its studios in Japan, Square Enix External Studios, and Square Enix Collective.

The $300 million sale to Embracer Group includes Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal and Square Enix Montréal, intellectual property rights to franchises like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix.

Embracer Group is the parent company of a group of businesses in PC, console and mobile development as well as board games and other related media, like Gearbox Entertainment, THQ Nordic, Coffee Stain, Koch Media, Amplifier Game Invest, Saber Interactive, DECA Games, Easybrain, Asmodee and Dark Horse. The company includes 119 internal game studios.
