The Greek Freak Lands On the Standard Cover of NBA 2K19

In the 20 years that the NBA 2K video game series has been around, they’ve had the best of the best grace the cover of the annual 2K game.  However, they’ve never had a player of international descent.  For the 2019 edition, they picked a heck of player to be the first.  Giannis Antetokounmpo, lovingly known as The Greek Freak, is the current Forward/Guard for the Milwaulkee Bucks.  As his moniker suggests, Antetokounmpo hails from Athens, Greece and has become the pride of a nation not known for producing once-in-a-generation basketball players.  Now, Greeks and gamers around the world can show their admiration for the beloved Greek by purchasing the standard edition of NBA 2K19, when it releases on this Fall.

Take a look at the introductory trailer, narrated by Giannis’ mother Veronica…

The first player in NBA history to finish a regular season in the Top 20 of scoring, rebounds, steals, assists, and blocks, can now officially add the title of first international cover athlete of the standard edition of NBA 2K19!

2K’s reveal was similar to that of LeBron James‘ announcement of the 20th Anniversary Edition of NBA 2K19, that nostalgic home video format, narrated to reinforce where they came from.  Heck, even the covers look similar, featuring the scribble of different words to describe these athletes.  The biggest difference, of course, is that 2K is showing Giannis in his Milwaulkee Bucks uniform, something they intelligently didn’t include for the newest member of the L.A. Lakers.  After last year’s Kyrie Irving debacle, who could blame them?

As Cinelinx’s resident Greek, the Antetokoumpo edition will be copy I look most forward to purchasing, and as always I’ll cheer him on to do well in what looks to be a wide open Eastern Conference!

NBA 2K19 releases September 11, 2018 on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch.  Of course, if that’s too late NBA 2K19: The Prelude will be available as of August 31, 2018 for Xbox One and PS4!

Which edition will you purchase?  Giannis’ or LeBron’s?
