WCG Returns to Hold a Massive eSports Festival in 2018

For the better part of a year or so, people have been saying that eSports is one of the fastest growing sports today, and with good reason.  We have ELeague, ESL, and even individual eSports events like Call of Duty World League, Overwatch League, etc.  However, before those became as big as they are today, there was WCG.  Before its 5 year hiatus, the World Cyber Games were the largest eSports event in the world for 13 years.

In 2018, they may just reclaim that title.

At a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand, WCG CEO Kwon HyukBin took the stage to announce that WCG was back and that they had BIG plans for 2018.  Instead of returning with just one tournament, WCG has decided to make their grand re-introduction to the eSports world by putting on a massive festival that will feature tournaments for some of today’s biggest eSports.

On April 26, in Bangkok, Thailand, WCG will be hosting WCG 2018 with the theme of “Global eSports Festival for a Better World”.  This festival will consist of 4 separate zones to accommodate all eSports walks of life.  The zones are as follows:

  • Super Arena – this zone is all about the high-stakes competition for games like CS:GO, Clash Royale, Heroes of Newerth, and DOTA 2, with more titles to be added soon.
  • New Horizon – this zone will feature the future of eSports with VR, courtesy of HTC VIVE, and Drone competitions will be held, in conjunction with the Drone Champions League.
  • Festival – If you’re into DJs, concerts, and Cosplay, the Festival zone will be right up your alley.  A giant Cosplay contest will be going on within this zone, along with concerts performed by Rogue Owner and renowned DJ Steve Aoki and Dim Mak.  Plus, a very special TED talks will be held during the event.
  • Fan Stadium – A comprehensive WCG fandom expo, like a con.

“With its new chapter, WCG aims to break the boundaries of race, culture and generations, and become an arena of harmony for a better world,” said WCG CEO Kwon HyukBin. “We have incorporated various eSports with contemporary culture and festival, targeting younger generation who enjoy eSports, and also family members to enjoy together. This would support WCG’s goal of becoming a true global festival of bringing everyone from around the world.”

WCG 2018 will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from April 26-29.  For ticket information and more on the event, click here.
