Graphic Review: Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls

Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls collects issues #0 through #7 of the monthly title. It revolves around a young performer with Haly’s Circus named Calvin Rose. Little did he suspect he was being secretly raised to be a killer known as a Talon for the Court of Owls. Rose flees from his evil destiny, which makes him a target of the secret society and their assassins. Talons don’t just leave their jobs when they feel like it. They have an oath to uphold… well after death. After the “Night of Owls,” the fugitive Talon returns to Gotham City to help clean up what’s left of the Court and finally gain true freedom from his preordained life of unholy servitude.

James Tynion IV deviously scripts a story co-plotted by Scott Snyder and himself. Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls has everything comic book and mystery / thriller fans could ever want. They blend together all the elements of pulpy classic crime and detective novels together with the action and adventure expected from a book rooted in the world of the Dark Knight. There’s nothing better than great twists and this graphic novel has them for sure.

Guillem March handles the majority of the art for Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls. His style is precise and brings Tynion and Snyder’s story to life visually. Juan Jose Ryp pencils part 3 using his unique style. You can definitely tell the difference between these two artists immediately. Some might find this distracting, while others will look at it as an interesting change in scenery.

Bonus material for Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls includes a couple exciting items. There are seven pages of variant covers by artists like Trevor McCarthy, Andy Clarke, Mike Choi, Billy Tucci, and more. Cover and character sketches are provided by Guillem March as well.

Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls is a satisfying companion piece to all the other graphic novels that tell the tales of the Court of Owls. Filled with explosive action and plenty of suspense, it will most certainly please fans of the Dark Knight Detective. The conclusion of the book leaves readers panting in anticipation for the next chapter in the tale of Calvin Rose and his continuing battle with the Court.
