5. Star Wars Rebels Season 4 Trailer
We’re kicking off our list with the trailer for the fourth and final season of Star Wars Rebels. Over the last three years, we’ve been on quite a journey with the crewmembers of the Ghost. We’ve seen the likes of Ezra and Sabine grow before our very eyes as we witnessed Hera rise to a higher status within the rebellion and Kanan learn new ways of the force, never thought possible. Now, with this upcoming season, we will finally see their journey come to an end.
The trailer itself foreshadows a dark finale for our favorite rebels as they take on their toughest adversary, Grand Admiral Thrawn. In the Season 3 finale, Thrawn had finally pinpointed where the Rebels were hiding and launched a full scale planetary attack. With only 15 episodes of this final season, it’s likely that each episode will be just as important as the next, without the unnecessary filler episodes. Moreover, we’ll be getting even more Rogue One tie-ins with the brief shot of Yavin 4.
4. Star Wars Battlefront II Trailer
As a gamer, this could’ve been the only trailer shown at Star Wars Celebration and I would’ve been happy. After the debacle that was the first Star Wars Battlefront, EA and DICE went back to the drawing board and developed a much-needed story. What they came up with was unconventional and simply amazing.
When Star Wars Battlefront II makes its debut, gamers and Star Wars fans will finally get to see something they hadn’t yet seen. The aftermath of Return of the Jedi from the point-of-view of the Empire. The story won’t just stop there, though. Battlefront II will bridge the gap from Return of the Jedi all the way to The Force Awakens. This trailer and storyline promise had millions of gamers, felt wronged by EA, immediately forgive the company and sprint to their nearest gaming store to pre-order the game.
3. 40th Anniversary of Star Wars Panel
Is there a better way to kick off Star Wars Celebration than with George Lucas reuniting with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Warwick Davis, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid, and Hayden Christensen? The answer is no, by the way. Many would argue that showing the Episode VIII trailer would’ve been better, but I adamantly disagree.
After 40 years of Star Wars, it’s better to honor the past before looking ahead to the future. These men were some of the founding members of the Star Wars universe, so we absolutely should hear what they have to say, and they did not disappoint. Each one of them brought unique never-before-heard stories from the sets of the first six films. Among which included Mark Hamill’s audition tape and Harrison Ford hilariously having George Lucas re-write many lines because they didn’t make sense. It was a memorable moment that had many of us laughing, crying, and applauding the people that made up a better part of our childhood.
2. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Teaser Trailer
Man, this trailer was sweet. Somehow Disney masterfully showed us very little while giving us many things to ponder over for the next 8 months…Like, why does Luke want the Jedi to end? What has he learned from his many years in isolation? Who are Rey’s parents? After this trailer it sure doesn’t seem like it’s Luke, like many believed. What’s the First Order up to? Why is Kylo going helmetless? Are we actually going to see a flashback?
See, so many questions but that’s the mark of a solid teaser. If a teaser like this can keep us on the edge of our seats, like this, it’s done its job. In terms of pace and scene construction, it felt a lot like the first teaser for The Force Awakens, shown a few years ago. The way Rey’s hand jumps out at you was like Finn rising in the desert. The ships flying all in a row were like the X-wings going over the water. The only difference is that the stakes feel much higher than in The Force Awakens.
Two things made the teaser better. First, the poster. I don’t need another poster after that one. It’s simple, yet deep, with a major reference to A New Hope’s poster. Secondly, the panel preceding the trailer. If you were lucky enough to watch it, the panel gave us a lot of insight into what will happen in Episode VIII. Two of the most telling items were: the First Order isn’t sitting on their hands and that they’ll be claiming power after they destroyed the republic, and Luke won’t live up to Rey’s perception. So, take those things into account when you watch the trailer for what should be the 80th time by now.
Honorable Mention: Star Wars: Forces of Destiny
The only reason this didn’t make the list is because it isn’t a finished product. I love the concept of a mini-series based on short stories from the heroines of the Star Wars Universe, though. It’ll be really interesting to see which stories they decide to tackle. As I’ve mentioned before, I really hope they show us the Ahsoka Tano story from when she left the Jedi Order to joining with the Rebellion. There is a part of me that does wish that these shorts were longer than 2-3 minutes. I would’ve rathered they have their own 20-25 minute show on Disney Channel and each week was a different story with a different character, but that may be just me.
1. Tribute to Carrie Fisher
For many, the teaser for Episode VIII may have been the end-all be-all for Star Wars Celebration. While it was a close second, nothing could’ve superseded the tribute to our princess, Carrie Fisher. Disney and Lucasfilm put together a heartfelt package featuring behind-the-scenes videos of Fisher that had us laughing and crying. While we may still be in mourning over her loss, Disney’s beautiful tribute and Billie Lourd remembering her late mother were the perfect vehicles to set us on the path to acceptance.
