Rumors about Star Wars Battlefront 3 almost feel like something of a running joke now. Like persistent rumors for the Ghostbusters 3 or Arrested Development movies, a new rumor crops up every couple of months, has people talking, and generally nothing comes of it. Each time we keep our fingers crossed though.
So it’s with a weary heart that I post this rumor. I’m not sure if I can suffer another heartache of a false report regarding Battlefront 3. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to in the six years (yeah SIX!) since Battlefront 2 was released. So when a new rumor pops up, I feel excitement taking me over…only to be replaced by disappointment and sorrow soon after.
Yet, despite knowing all this, I’m going to go ahead and post this latest rumor and cross my fingers once more. This is a lot of wild speculation, based on different clues, rolled into one theory…so take it with a grain of salt. A few months ago, rumor came out that game developer Spark Unlimited were working on Battlefront 3. However, there wasn’t much evidence at the time to support it outside of a vague description on their site that said:
“We are in production on an unannounced high-profile, popular game sequel for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release.”
Yeah, that’s not much to go on, as that could be a reference to just about anything. Now, here’s where it gets a little more interesting. A recent job posting on their site has added a little more to that description:
Spark is looking for a senior combat designer for a 3rd Person Action/Adventure sequel in a high-profile science fiction franchise currently greenlit for full production development for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC markets.
All right, so that narrows it down a bit, but still nothing conclusive. Let’s throw in this recent tweet into the mix:
Since we are working on a sequel for a well known sci-fi franchise, all aspects must remain secret.
Hmmm…While none of these things really points to Battlefront 3, put together they do make one wonder. If that’s the case then I’ll be one incredibly happy camper and will be able to sleep just a little easier. However, one of the Senior Engineer’s LinkedIn pages, says they’re working on a game for a 2012 release. If that’s true and it IS BF3…then we should hear some sort of official announcement soon.
To be honest, I’m not completely sold on this one. LucasArts and any of the companies related to Star Wars aren’t usually big on keeping things hidden for long. Star Wars is a big brand, and they normally announce things well in advance (The Force Unleashed 1 & 2, the Kinect game, and the blu-rays) in order to drum up interest and get the hype going. That being said, I have a hard time believing they would release a game within the year without a mention of it yet.
Who knows, maybe this will happen and give fans something they’ve been wanting for a long time. So what do you guys make of this rumor?
