Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has taken the world by storm. If you haven’t played it, are on the fence about playing it, or don’t know anything about it, NOW is the time to fall into this addictingly fun battle royale. This our review of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.

A Unique, Delightfully-Addicting New Battle Royale Game

Do you remember the show Wipeout? If you don’t, it was this uproarious funny game show that put average people on eccentric obstacle courses for a chance at a big cash prize. Video game publisher Devolver Digital and developer Mediatonic have a new battle royale game that’s in that similar vein. It’s called Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and it’s been one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had with video games in this crazy year of 2020.

In Fall Guys, you are one of 60 online players vying for the coveted crown. To achieve total victory and claim the golden crown, contestants must survive 5 unique challenges that range from racing to the finish, playing a game of soccer, stealing tails off of your opponents, gathering the most eggs, surviving brick walls and rotating platforms, running on dissolving hexagons, matching fruit, avoiding giant fruit, and even figuring out how seesaws work.

Each challenge has their own set of strategies you learn as you play the game. Not all of these strategies are innocent, either. I learned the hard way when I first started playing that Fall Guys is literally survival of the fittest. Therefore, other players will push you off platforms, jump on top of you, steal eggs from your basket, and so on all in the name of eliminating you. Despite it’s delightful, palate-pleasing, kid-friendly visuals, Fall Guys is as cut-throat as they come.

Yet, this cut-throat style never seemed to bog me down. It never felt like a toxic environment like players sometimes experience in other battle royale games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, CoD Warzone, and so on. It merely felt like it was part of the competition. In fact, any potential toxicity was overshadowed by all of the unique and interesting challenges and the wacky and weird ways in which your Fall Guy moves and falls. I think my wife stated it perfectly when she said, “it looks like they’re drunk”. Which it very much does. It is worth noting that Fall Guys is also very fun to play when you’re pretty buzzed.

That’s because Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is in essence a fun party game. No, it doesn’t have split-screen couch co-op but there is plenty of capability to play online with friends. In this age of social distancing, a lot of parties are happening online anyway so it works out.

Nevertheless, Fall Guys is just all about having fun and it achieves that in spades with its fun, inventive challenges, wacky characters, and hilarious ragdoll mechanics.

Regularly Updated, Easily Attainable Customization are Where It’s At

Aside from the challenges and the ragdoll gameplay mechanics, one of the best parts of Fall Guys is how they approach customization and the season pass leveling. When you first start, players can choose from a small selection of skins for their Fall Guy. These skins can change the color, add patterns, and even add upper and lower costumes. Players will find a Wolf costume when they log in for the first time.

However, once you start playing, the game will reward participants with in-game currency, Kudos. Based on how many challenges you complete and how you perform will dictate whether you get a lot of Kudos or just a few. That said, the game is very generous overall with their Kudos. It doesn’t stop there, though. You’ll also get points toward your season pass, which also generously levels up. The season pass will reward players with skins, costumes, emotes, and even more Kudos to use in the online marketplace.

What’s fantastic is how frequently Mediatonic updates the online marketplace too, because it allows players new costumes and skins to strive for. Which, yet again is easily attainable just by continuously playing. Furthermore, it gives players the opportunity to show their individuality for each challenge.

That said, while Kudos are easy to collect and purchase (if you’re into that.) what’s not easy to get your hands on are the Crowns. That’s right, the crowns you’re vying for in the challenges are actually what you can use to buy even more premium costumes. For instance, there was a lower piece that made your Fall Guy’s lower half into an aquarium, but it cost like 3 crowns. It’s yet another thing that makes Fall Guys so addicting and just so enjoyable.

Upbeat Music & Imagery That Pulls You In

Like most players when I play a battle royale game or even Destiny 2, I tend to have my Spotify playlists running in my headset at the same time. It usually centers me and allows me to focus and just overall enjoy my time playing. Currently, my main playlist is a lot of anime openings, because frankly that music slaps.

Nevertheless, when I play Fall Guys I have no need for any of my usual Spotify playlists. The music is so upbeat, so fun that it just adds to the overall experience. Even better, the music changes the longer you play. It starts out so fun and playful, but the longer you play the tones get a bit more frantic and lower to make you feel the urgency of the moment. I just can’t get enough of it and the main music bed has been stuck in my head for a few days, which isn’t a bad thing.

Another aspect that pulls you into Fall Guys is the beautiful, yet simplistic imagery. At first glance, what most will notice is how colorful Fall Guys is. It’s very vibrant and uses a lot of eye-popping colors that are very visually appealing. However, when you really pay close attention to the environment, you really start to notice the finer details of each challenge.

Each obstacle course has extraneous detail that serve as a sort of reason for the obstacles to be there. For instance, in the See-saw and Fan courses, there are several fans running underneath the course to give reason as to how this obstacle course is suspended in the air. Furthermore, in challenges where you have to try not to fall in the slime, there are buoys in the slime. What are they for? I don’t know but I greatly appreciate them being there. Players will also notice cameras, which adds to the lore of Fall Guys being just one big crazy reality-game show.

Should You Play It?

I’d say yes, because Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is one of those games that is really great for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a young child or an older adult, you’re bound to have fun with these ridiculous challenges and the ragdoll mechanics. Plus, it’s great for socializing with family and friends to play together or take turns at home to see who can go the furthest. It’s just an overall good time.

As an added bonus, Fall Guys is the free PlayStation Plus game for the month of August. So, you’re not losing out on anything if you wind up not enjoying it. At the same time, Fall Guys is just $20 on Steam. So, it’s easily accessible for the most part. Although, I do hope it makes its way to all consoles soon, especially the Switch. Fall Guys is definitely a Nintendo Switch kind of game.

Fall Guys Grabs The Crown as One of the Most Fun Games of 2020

This review has been primarily positive and with good reason. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is just an absolute blast to play. The challenges are fun, the season pass is very easy to navigate, and customization options are regularly updated and easily accessible. Furthermore, Fall Guys has already cultivated a rather enjoyable community so far. You should definitely follow the official Fall Guys twitter to understand why and get regular updates.

When I was trying to come up with some things I didn’t like, I thought of maybe a few challenges like the Egg one or some of the team challenges that I dread, but those aren’t really negatives. In games like this, you’re not supposed to love every challenge. It’s kind of the point not to, but to overcome those challenges.

It is worth mentioning that early on there were some struggles with connecting to servers. Some were even review-bombing Fall Guys because of it, which is unnecessary. Fortunately, I have not had a single server issue on PlayStation 4, so it seems to me like everything is running smoothly, overall.

In what’s becoming a rather long list of amazing games in 2020, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout easily takes the crown as one of the enjoyable I’ve played so far. It’s definitely one I fell in love with and recommend for everyone.
