One Of Those Days
Yehuda and Maya Devir began illustrating their life in comics when they moved into their first apartment together in Tel Aviv as newlyweds. In the years since, One of Those Days has become one of the biggest webcomics on the Internet, with millions of followers around the world. Yehuda Devir grew up on superhero comic books, and the Devirs’ visual style is downright kinetic and bursting with life.
In this collection—the first time that the Devirs’ comics have been compiled in one volume—they share stories that are heartwarming, hilarious, and universally recognizable. So even for those who don’t feel like pulling out an assault rifle to wage war on a kitchen cockroach, the Devirs’ challenges and triumphs are instantly familiar to anyone who’s had one of those days.
Almost all artists put a little bit of themselves into their work, in the case of Yehuda and Maya Devir, they took that concept and ran all the way up the mountain with it. The artistically talented and viral sensations, Yehuda and Maya, have broken down the fourth wall and put their personal lives front and center. They are the stars of their own story, and they are the stars of One of Those Days, their latest release.
Like the summary says, this is the first time all their domestic adventures, marital ups and downs, and nurturing nightmares have been compiled into one big, beautiful book. If you are not familiar with their work-to-date, funny and charming doesn’t really begin to describe what this married couple has created. It’s more of a movement, one that has earned them millions of followers around the world across social media. To date, Yehuda has 5.5 million followers on Instagram, Maya has 1.1 million…not too shabby!
While I had heard of them, I never exposed myself to Yehuda and Maya’s work in a meaningful way, and well, it doesn’t take long to understand the appeal or recognize the talent on display. It’s easy to see why their work resonates with so many people, who have opened themselves up to the married couple in profound and personal ways.
True to form, this book displays all the love two people could muster, or in this case, illustrate, as their talents are on full display in one pop-culture infused package. And the package is wonderful and substantive, with full color illustrations wrapped in a gorgeous hardcover binding, this weighs a ton and is totally worth the cover price from that standpoint.
Sure, the pages depict a surrealistic lifestyle with bulging muscles, exaggerated features, and high-powered rifles, but barely hidden is a fundamental truth. And that is never underestimate the powers of relatability and empathy, and if these superheroes had a catchphrase, it would be “We’re the same as you!” Not as exciting as "I am the vengeance, I am the night, I am BATMAN!", but you get the point.
And nothing is off the table for these two including one of the most personal journeys a couple can take, the struggle to conceive. This deeply moving, and sometimes taboo subject, has endeared them to million of people, who celebrated right along with them when news of their daughter Ariel came about.
The moments are captured with simple taglines, letting the visuals do the heavy lifting. Some of my favorites include “We Had A Fight”, “Juicerstein”, “Flightmare”, “Operation Ovulation” , “Baby Potion”, and “It’s A Girl!” But keep in mind there are 126 “moments” to choose from, and each one is just as great as the last. And like I said, they use pop-culture as inspiration for many of the illustrations including The Shining, Raging Bull, Matrix, John Wick, and Logan. Yes, their geek credentials are entirely without question.
Listen, if life as a young married couple and newly minted parents doesn’t do anything for you, then simply marvel at the stunning illustrations by these two uber-talented people. The drawings are fun, full of dreamscape, and the lines are perfect. Like I said earlier, this is a beautiful book to look at.
At such a low price, this is great way to get caught up in the lives of Yehuda and Maya in one, easy-to-read volume. And with a demographically wide reach, this book is really for anyone, but definitely a must-read for any young couples looking to take the next step, or two.
