Martin Scorsese is one of the most iconic directors of all time. He created such groundbreaking films like Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York. Yet it took him eight Oscar nominations, five Best Director nominations alone, until he finally received the Best Director Academy Award in 2006 for the film The Departed. Let's look back at the film that finally landed Scorese the gold.
Scorsese is one of those directors that has been creating for generations. He's the known for creating and depicting the worst antiheroes that you can't help but like and can't stop watching. You follow them on their twisted journeys and sometimes untimely demises, all while that same Rolling Stone song (“Gimme Shelter”) plays in the background. Your parents loved him, you love him, and I'm sure your children will or already do love him. There's always one particular movie of his that you discover that makes you hungry to hunt out every other film of his and devour. Mine was The Departed. Sure, I was a little late in the Scorese game, but even after watching Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull, The Departed is still my favorite.
Many people were upset and disappointed this year when Leonardo DiCaprio lost his fourth and fifth Oscar (Best Actor and Best Picture for The Wolf of Wall Street which he also produced) this year to Matthew McConaughey. While I would have loved for him to win, I knew that it wasn't going to happen. The Academy tends to pick winners that make one excellent movie, like Jean Dujardin for The Artist, Halle Berry for Monster's Ball, rather than actors constantly producing knockout performances in every film. Sure, there are exceptions like Daniel Day-Lewis and Cate Blanchett, but they are rare. "Why give the gold to someone who will continue to create a career of golden performances even if they lose?" That's the Academy's mantra. I think we all know deep down that eventually Leo's Oscar curse will break and until then we will continue to watch and root for him.

You might think it's unfair to draw comparisons between two movies that don't seem to have much in common, aside from boasting the same leading man, but they have more in common than meets the eye, and although they both started out on a level playing field 'Inception' has blown 'Shutter Island' out of the water. DiCaprio has taken us on two psychological rides this year and while one has the fans screaming to climb back on, the other fizzled and more enjoyment was derived from the anticipation of the ride than the ride it self. In case you're wondering - Yes, there will be spoilers.
