So your director has dumped hours of footage on your desk with a smile and a wave saying he’ll see you in a couple weeks.  Where do you get started?  Regardless of the project (be it feature, short, doc, even student film) or the system you are using your very first step is to get your footage organized.  I use Final Cut Pro so just about all of my tips will be coming from that perspective but most editing software can do similar things (might be labeled differently).
