Stiller and DeNiro's Little Fockers managed to win the box office derby, but it was definitely a good Christmas for Jeff Bridges, who starred in two of the top three movies for Christmas weekend 2010. With Christmas falling on a Saturday, overall attendance at theaters was down for the seventh straight week, compared to last year.
Tron: Legacy rebooted the Hollywood box office, providing a jump start to the Christmas movie season after several down weeks. The other big opening, Yogi Bear, didn't fare as well but still finished second for a nice picnic basket of a weekend.
Harry Potter outgained Rapunzel at the box office, but only by a hair, according to studio estimates. Even so, there were plenty of holiday leftovers for everyone, as the nation's top 15 movies all managed to gross at least $1 million over the Thanksgiving weekend of November 26 through 28, 2010.
Hollywood, and everyone else for that matter, was crazy for Harry as the latest installment of the "Harry Potter" series conjured up over $125 million in its opening weekend, well ahead of second place "Megamind." The only other new film in theaters, Russell Crowe's "The Next Three Days," barely cracked the weekend's top five.
"Megamind" conquered the box office for the second straight week, outpacing Denzel Washington's runaway train, CGI aliens, and even Indiana Jones. Among new films for the weekend, "Unstoppable" had a strong opening, while "Morning Glory" and "Skyline" failed to impress audiences.
