Post-Alicization: ‘Sword Art Online: Progressive’ Anime Announced

With the two year epic saga that was Sword Art Online: Alicization concluded, it seems the story of SAO isn’t over just yet as a new anime, Sword Art Online: Progressive, has been announced.

No sooner did the end credits roll on Sword Art Online: Alicization, then a new anime in the world of SAO was being announced. Sword Art Online: Progressive will be based on Reki Kawahara’s six volume series that follows Kirito and Asuna at the very beginning of their journey in Aincrad, starting at level 1 of the 100-level castle that dominated the anime’s very first season.

A brief teaser was released on YouTube, hinting at how this story will be told largely from Asuna’s point of view (or at least that we’ll get more of her perspective as opposed to Kirito):

There was also a gorgeous teaser image released, that shows Asuna standing in front of the Aincrad castle. Notably, she’s wearing the outfit she’s first seen in when she and Kirito first meet in season 1. This is NOT the Vice-Commander of The Knight’s of the Blood Oath (that comes much later in Asuna’s journey). Sword Art Online: Progressive will no doubt relay how Asuna comes to be the no-nonsense vice-commander leading raids in season 1.

There’s currently no release window for Sword Art Online: Progressive. Given that Sword Art Online: Alicization just wrapped up, it may be awhile before this new SAO adventure arrives.

What do you think of the teaser for Sword Art Online: Progressive?
