Battlefield Requires Secure Boot, But Cheaters Are Still Squeezing In

The Battlefield beta is well underway for early access players, and a huge influx of players is expected this weekend when the beta goes fully open. However it seems that cheaters on PC have already found their way into lobbies.

Why do you need to cheat in a beta?

EA requires PC gamers to utilize a secure boot sequence in order to play the beta. The process includes a slight technical change in the bios to only allow trusted programs to boot alongside the game. And before you go on attacking EA for this new step, it seems to be a new trend among games as Activision has also announced the sequence will be required for the upcoming Black Ops 7.

Publishers are rather desperate to remove cheaters that are plaguing their games, and older titles are seeing more excessive issues. Older Call of Duty titles, for example, are seeing hackers outright hack into players accounts.

On social networks, one user posted “confirmed cheats already working on Battlefield 6” while posting a video of a cheat bot functioning in the new beta. In several posts I’ve seen, several streamers that have been caught cheating before are clearly using similar bots in their videos. In multiple clips users are outright expressing concern when recognizing it.

It’s obviously impossible (currently) to outright stop cheating full stop, but with the widespread issues in Call of Duty it seems wise for EA to put more effort into making their game more secure. Which they are doing as the videos gaining popularity on social networks showcasing the cheaters have all led to the players getting banned. Their new step for safe boot also seems like a great step in the right direction, but will require some assistance from 3rd parties like Microsoft and Steam.

TPM 2.0 is another step being taken, as explained by Activision

TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) is an industry-standard, hardware-based security feature built onto CPUs or motherboards that verifies the PC’s boot process has not been tampered with. Secure Boot makes sure a PC can only load trusted software when Windows starts.

Currently the Battlefield beta has gained over 300k players, which has put it at the top of concurrent player lists on Steam. The beta opens for all players tomorrow.
