Nintendo dropped a veritable bomb today when it announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting a new update almost four years after the last major one was released.
The major update will drop alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game on January 15, 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Pack will cost $4.99 for users. Version 3.0 will release for free for all players.
The last big update, Version 2.0, for New Horizons dropped on November 4, 2021, which included 16 villagers, The Roost, Boat tours, an expansion to Harv’s Island, and other updates like the upgraded storage and home exterior customization.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will include some new console features like mouse controls, an in-game megaphone that uses the system microphone, online play up to 12 players and CameraPlay.
The major new features to the 3.0 update includes Kapp’n’s family venture the Resort Hotel, the long-awaited return of Resetti, Slumber Island via Nintendo Switch Online and more Nintendo franchise collabs involving amiibo figures. LEGO items will also make their debut in the new update.
Kapp’n’s Resort Hotel
“A resort hotel is opening on the pier, and it’s run by Kapp’n’s family. To bring in guests from off the island, you’ll help out by decorating guest rooms and more,” Nintendo said about the new feature in a news release. “Plus, find new furniture and clothing at the souvenir shop and dress up mannequins with outfits that guests can wear.”
Players will be given themes to achieve in hotel rooms, and items that fit the theme to decorate with. You will also be able to use your items from storage as well.
You’ll earn Hotel Tickets for your efforts, which can be redeemed for items at the Souvenir Shop. You will also be able to recommend outfits for your guests to don while they visit your island, some of which can be invited via amiibos. Tom Nook will allow you to craft DIY recipes to donate daily to exchange for more hotel tickets and promote your island’s hotel.
Storage upgrades
Players will also be able to upgrade home storage to hold up to 9,000 items, including trees, shrubs and flowers.
Resetti
Resetti will offer his handy Reset Service “to help tidy up the island.”
There are three options to choose from that he can tidy: the entire island, just the beach, and an area that you choose. He can place flowers in storage or dispose of them, and remove custom designs.
Slumber Island
Slumber Island will allow players to “design and save up to three islands and play with friends online,” including choosing the size and layout of the island, collaborative building and storage. You’ll also be able to invite residents from your home island to move in.
Players can use Slumber Island solo player. You’ll be able to decorate using items you’ve previously obtained, and place plants and trees more easily as decorative items.
