It’s never truly a Sony State of Play presentation without some kind of Final Fantasy news, and Square Enix was not about to disappoint today. This year, the JRPG giant revealed a new take on an iconic 1997 classic, Final Fantasy Tactics. This is a game that’s no stranger to additional content, seeing not only two new games in its wake in the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance series, but countless remasters and re-releases, from the vaunted War of the Lions edition on PSP to its recreations on Android and iOS. Today, we were treated to the latest version, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, which looks to solve the eternal problem of “which version to play?” by simply including both. Check out the teaser trailer on YouTube or right here:
The trailer shows off the updated graphics, as well as the extent of the voiced dialogue that will appear in the Enhanced edition. It also takes a moment to explain the differences in the Classic and Enhanced versions of the game. It seems that the Classic will actually be a mix of the original PS1 release’s gameplay features with the translation made famous by the War of the Lions release. Meanwhile, the Enhanced edition provides a new UI, story additions, and fully voiced dialogue, among other goodies.
As someone who’s always been partial to the original PS1 translation, it’s a bit of a disappointment to hear that it’s apparently fully going the way of the dodo. Even so, there are significant gameplay differences to be found in the original, so I’m glad to see they are offering players the chance to choose their experience in one title this time around. Plus, the game releases right around the corner, so anyone who’s been looking to experience the world of Ivalice in its original incarnation or been eagerly awaiting a return to this old favorite won’t have to wait long!
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles releases on September 30th, 2025 on the Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Playstation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Steam Deck.
