Xbox Game Pass’ Day One Tier Will Cost You $360/Year. Here’s What Else Changed.

Microsoft revealed an overhaul in the structure of its popular Xbox Game Pass, including a rework of its membership tiers, a “major boost” for Xbox Cloud Gaming, and ways for the top tier players to earn money back for playing games.

The Xbox team broke down the update to Game Pass in a blog post, which states the company’s goal of “evolving Game Pass to offer more flexibility, choice, and value to all players, whether you love day one releases, discovering hidden gems, or playing across multiple devices and screens and across Xbox consoles, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud.”

Xbox Game Pass now features three tiers of membership: Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Microsoft said the in the news release that all three tiers each get expanded game libraries, PC player access, online multiplayer on console, and “in-game benefits, including for Riot Games.”

Microsoft explained in the blog post that “Standard” subscribers are being upgraded to “Premium” under the new system, “Core” subscribers will be changed to “Essential” at the same price point, and “Ultimate subscribers will remain in the Ultimate plan.”

The pricing structure and limitations for each tier is as follows:

Essential tier: $9.99 per month. This includes “50+ games,” and players will be able to “play and earn up for $25 a year in the Store with Rewards.”

Premium tier: $14.99 per month. This includes “200+ games” and players will be able to “play and earn up for $50 a year in the Store with Rewards.”

Microsoft said Xbox added more than 40 titles to the Xbox Game Pass library for Premium subscribers today. New Xbox-published games within a year of their launch will be added for Premium subscribers with the exception of Call of Duty titles.

Ultimate tier: $29.99 per month. This includes “400+ games” and players will be able to “play and earn up for $100 a year in the Store with Rewards.”

The company says that Ultimate will specifically include access to more than 75 Day One games per year, as well as included subscriptions for Ubisoft+ Classic, EA Play and Fortnite Crew starting on November 18. The Xbox Cloud access will also have the best quality performance up to 1440p and shortest wait times, according to Microsoft.

Day One titles spotlighted by the company includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 7High on Life 2KeeperNinja Gaiden 4, and The Outer Worlds 2.

When Xbox Game Pass first launched in 2017, it started at $9.99 per month for its original library of around 100 games and was mainly focused on console players. In 2023, Microsoft made the change to replace Xbox Live Gold with Game Pass access, and then in 2024 the company introduced the “Standard” tier of access that separated Day One launches from the “Ultimate tier.”

Rewards

Microsoft outlined how Xbox Game Pass players will be able to utilize the new rewards system.

“Ultimate subscribers can now earn up to $100 per year (100k points globally) in the Store just by playing games. With our upgraded Rewards program, players can get up to 30% value on select Game Pass games, with 4x points on purchases of games and add-ons, 10% back in points on select Game Pass library titles and add-ons, and up to 20% off select Game Pass games,” Microsoft said in the news release.
