Yes, they still exist.
(Allow me to preface this. We are not in any way sponsored by Gamefly. What transpired was entirely a cool story I’ll remember the rest of my days!)
When you have a wedding it almost seems standard to try and invite famous people and maybe corporations in hopes that you luck out and catch them on a good day. Maybe they randomly show up with a few cameras, maybe they just send a thank you note you’ll cherish, or maybe they ignore you. It can’t hurt to try.
Despite our brief attempts to reach out, we received little responses. However, we noticed a favorite company of ours making a stir online, perhaps claiming they weren’t invited to many weddings, but had an honest request to invite them and maybe something will come in return. This is likely because, for some reason, Gamefly has become an internet meme, with people constantly asking, “Do they still exist?” whenever the company is brought up.

But I’ll be honest, they are fantastic and absolutely do exist. They offer a superior alternative to Game Pass, providing all new releases, minimizing data usage, and giving you the option to purchase your favorite games at a substantial discount. Game Pass simply can’t compete, especially if you game on Nintendo or PlayStation, and enjoy physical media.
We aren’t here for that, however. We saw the post by Gamefly and decided to spontaneously send them a wedding invitation, just to see what their reaction would be. To our surprise, Gamefly responded with a very short message: “look out for a delivery.”
Both my wife and I instantly got excited. It’s not like we weren’t waiting by the mailbox like an elderly couple anyway since Resident Evil Requiem was on the way, but now we have a surprise coming our way too!
Idea’s started racing through our heads. My wife and I thought they might send a snarky letter or perhaps a trial code—we had some wild guesses too—but the fact that they acknowledged us at all was incredibly cool all on its own. Somehow just a simple response to our random request made our whole weekend.
Then the day finally arrived. A mysterious package was waiting in our mailbox. My wife came home, holding it with a huge grin. “This is from Gamefly,” she announced, setting it gently down in front of us. “What do you think it is?”

The package, a long, cylindrical tube that sat upright right in front of us. From its dimensions, one might logically assume it contained a few rolled-up posters or maybe some rolled up blueprints for their HQ. However, the sheer, unexpected heft of the thing immediately contradicted that notion. It was far too heavy, requiring both hands to lift with a noticeable weight, suggesting a density well beyond mere paper. Unable to stand the suspense any longer, and with every wild hypothesis from a baseball bat to a rather large mousepad in our minds, we dove in and opened it up, eager to solve the puzzle it presented.
Inside the outer packaging, which had initially piqued our curiosity, was a second, more intriguing layer: a long, tube-like object. This inner item was meticulously wrapped in some truly beautiful, high-quality wedding paper, the kind with subtle silver embossing that caught the light just so. Tucked securely to the inside wall of the outer tube, as if it were the secret key to the main treasure, was a small, personalized card.

We didn’t waste any time. With a mixture of excitement and anticipation—because let’s be honest, unwrapping wedding gifts is half the fun—we quickly tore away the elegant wrapping. The reveal did not disappoint. Holding it up, we instantly realized what it was, and the reaction was pure, authentic joy. Honestly, of all the thoughtful and wonderful gifts we received for our wedding, this one stands out as genuinely one of the coolest things. It wasn’t a traditional registry item; it was a giant, friggin banner, and I mean a huge, vivid piece of nostalgia from Gamefly! The sheer scale and unexpected nature of it made all the excitement totally worth it.

Did I mention the thing is huge? We’re debating where to put it. It might cover an entire wall in the game room, or perhaps we’ll hang it in the garage. I initially thought about displaying it out front across the house, so everyone passing by, including our neighbors, would get a daily reminder: “Yes, they exist!” However, both the HOA and my wonderful wife vetoed that plan.
The banner itself isn’t cheap either, it’s a legit vinyl banner with grommets to hang it up. Perhaps whoever sent it to us “borrowed” it from the official Gamefly office? But it’s ours now!
The Gamefly team included a genuinely personal touch with their gift: a handwritten congratulatory note inside the card, something I don’t even receive from my corporate job for my birthday. Accompanying the card was a thoughtful letter expressing belated congratulations on our wedding and offering a three-month Gamefly subscription to help us enjoy the start of our life as newlyweds.

The letter also mentions that the banner they sent is “very limited” with not many people with access to them. This not only made us feel even more special, but also made me question if perhaps the CEO of Gamefly is gonna be questioning why their back wall is suddenly empty. (I’m joking, I don’t think it was actually stolen.) I don’t know the real story of the banner, but being a total nerd it makes me so excited to have it.
The simple gesture from a company like Gamefly brought an unexpected and wide smile to our faces. We hadn’t anticipated anything, and even when we did, our expectations were low. While the banner was a complete surprise, the personal touch of a handwritten letter and careful gift wrapping truly elevated the experience.
So yes, Gamefly perhaps sealed the deal for a customer for life. Yes, Gamefly still exists. No we aren’t sponsored, but see what good will gestures can do? And heck, if Gamefly somehow manages to see this, thank you. Maybe the rest of the Cinelinx crew will finally believe me when I say how awesome you are.
