The hyper realistic looking bodycam style shooter is finding new life with some extra funding.
The extremely small studio behind the viral sensation gameplay of Unrecord announced that they have received new funding from Tencent. The studio was being ran by just 2 people initially and they set out to create an immersive FPS game like no other. By the time the viral teaser was released, the studio was only up to 10 developers.
They note that they are new to the industry and still have some things to work out before showcasing more of the game, but they expect to have lots of updates through 2026. The original roadblock was the fact the team was looking to create entirely new gameplay mechanics, and controller features, to heighten the user experience. Funding was obviously a big issue, so this should allow them to build what they planned.
Another interesting aspect to the teaser is the color palette chosen. A lot of games lately look “realistic,” but the Unrecord gameplay has a color palette that sets it over the top. This combined with the very authentic animations means they possibly have a large project in front of them.
Since showing off the teaser, the game of course has been knocked off with a few Unreal Engine clones over the past 3 years. Could this lead to a bit of saturation in the market? Possibly.
However it’s refreshing to see one of the better tech demo’s finally getting funding and pushed along. There were several horror titles that looked very similar in design that were announced around the same time that have all been completely canceled. So while Unrecord disappeared for a while, it’s more than welcome back. At the time of writing, the game still has over 130k wishlists on Steam, so I can’t be the only one.
