Sony Announces….Rewards….For You To Buy

We enjoyed having PlayStation Stars. It was a great program that let you earn points and attain rewards for using those points, for free. Now we got something…..else.

I’m not sure what virus swept over the corporate industry that abruptly made almost all of the reward programs suddenly close their doors, but Sony was not exempt from it. They closed down both PlayStation Stars and their overall Sony rewards program recently, the Stars program being a sole focus on PlayStation. The Stars program allowed you to earn points for spending money on the PlayStation Store, along with completing several “challenges” to earn additional points. If you were an active PS Plus subscriber, the points went up even faster.

Yet the program was shut down and my purchasing on PlayStation Store fell off dramatically. And I’m sure I’m not alone. However we got a glimpse of something new.

Sony today announced a new rewards program where players can quickly earn two trophies in the upcoming Ghost of Yotei that will unlock a special page on their official store to buy some exclusive products. If you unlock the “Mono no Aware” Gold trophy, you’ll be granted the ability to pay $30/€33 for a commemorative T-shirt. Unlock the “Living Legend” Platinum trophy and you can choose to pay $25/€28 for an commemorative pin.

Yeah, a “reward” you have to pay for. It’s basically “congrats, you earned the ability to spend more money!”

You have until December 31st to unlock this….reward…but Sony clearly notes that the “limited supply” and expiration date is capable of being changed. So is it even limited?

Players are quick to link this to Bungie because they have commonly done the same thing with Destiny by allowing players to access special products on their site for completing tasks within the game. Now if only the live service aspect of Bungie would translate to PlayStation as well.

To say fans are not thrilled about this is an understatement. It’s about as underwhelming as collectors editions not coming with physical discs anymore. Still interested though? Head over to ghostrewards.playstation.com
