The third 28 Years Later film, set to close out the entire saga, is officially moving forward at Sony with 28 Days Later star, Cillian Murphy, ready to return.
On the heels of Nia Da Costa’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple garnering pretty much universal praise thanks to select fan/press screenings this week, Sony has—blessedly—made the smart call and has given the third 28 Years Later film the greenlight. When Danny Boyle originally returned to the world of the infected, he pitched 28 Years Later as a trilogy. Sony picked up the first couple films, which shot back-to-back, with the option for the final film depending on how those did at the box office. They even mentioned this fact during this year’s Cinemacon, with Danny Boyle on stage.

Looks like they’re definitely happy with the vision so far and Deadline is reporting 28 Years Later III (a temporary title obviously) is in the works. Alex Garland is already working on the script and Cillian Murphy is in talks to reprise his role as Jim in the threequel. Boyle has previously alluded to Jim having a bigger part to play in the final film of this trilogy, and I’m crossing my fingers we’ll get Noamie Harris’ Selena back as well.
Currently, there’s no director for this one, but Boyle has made previous statements about his interest/desire to helm the final movie if it got the go ahead. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see! Hopefully they’ll get things together soon and we won’t have to wait too long to see how it all ends.
In the meantime, we still have 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple to look forward to as it hits theaters on January 16, 2026.
