Anna May Wong Biopic in the Works from Gemma Chan and Nina Yang Bongiovi

The first Chinese-American movie star is finally getting some long overdue recognition via a film biopic.

Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American movie star in Hollywood, starred in 60 films between 1919 and 1960. And according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, she’s finally getting the recognition she’s long deserved thanks to a biopic that’s in the works from Gemma Chan and Nina Yang Bongiovi.

“Anna May Wong was a trailblazer, an icon and a woman ahead of her time,” said Chan in a statement. “Her talent and her exploration of her art both in and outside of the U.S. was groundbreaking — and the challenges and prejudice she faced in the early 20th century as an actress speak directly to the conversations and the world we are navigating today.”

Gemma Chan will be portraying the famous actress as well as serving as executive producer for the film, while Bongiovi also works as a producer. The screenplay is being written by David Henry Hwang, and Wong’s niece Anna Wong is working as a consultant for the film. The story for the film is being adapted from the 2012 biography Anna May Wong: From Laundryman’s Daughter to Hollywood Legend.

Are you excited to see Anna May Wong finally get the recognition she deserves?
