First Trailer for Next Goal Wins Shows Off Taika Waititi’s Latest

Searchlight Pictures has finally revealed our first look at Taika Waititi’s new film, Next Goal Wins, telling the (mostly) true story about the world’s worst soccer team.

The road to Next Goal Wins has been a surprisingly long one. Based on a documentary of the same name, the film tells the story about the American Samoa national football (soccer) team and one coach’s attempt to turn them into something better, along with himself.

The movie actually wrapped filming a full YEAR before Thor: Love and Thunder even started, and was originally supposed to launch well before. Due to the pandemic, and some re-casting thanks to Armie Hammer, it’s been in a bit of limbo for a while.

Thankfully, however, Next Goal Wins is set to arrive this year, and there’s even a trailer to give us a first look:

Yep, definitely looks like a Waititi film! It’s got the humor, the charm, the underdog angle, and just looks to be a lot of fun. Consider me down for this one.

Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) Next Goal Wins follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Ronger (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worts soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.

Next Goal Wins is set to hit theaters on November 17, 2023.
