James Cameron’s The Abyss Returns to Theaters for One Night in 4K

20th Century Studios is giving movie-lovers a new chance to see James Cameron’s The Abyss on the big screen. Even better, it’s from the all new 4K remaster.

One thing movie fans/nerds have long been clamoring for, is a fresh release of The Abyss. Infamously, the movie never got a Blu-ray release, and we’ve been waiting years for Cameron himself to oversee the remastering to finally make it happen. As such, it’s been a tough film to see, even at home.

Thankfully, that’s changing soon. Earlier this year, word came that The Abyss was FINALLY getting a new home entertainment release, with additional footage and 4K quality. Today, Disney/20th Century Studios have announced a special one-day event (happening December 6th) where the “Special Edition” of the film will be in theaters.

In this underwater sci-fi adventure written and directed by James Cameron, a nuclear sub mysteriously sinks and a private oil rig crew, led by foreman Bud Brigman (Ed Harris), is recruited to join a team of Navy SEALs on a search and rescue effort. The group soon finds themselves on a spectacular life-and-death odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean’s surface, where they find a mysterious force that could either change the world — or destroy it. “The Abyss” stars Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn.

The Abyss returns to theaters for one day on December 6, 2023 with tickets going on sale November 20th.
