Original Version of Star Wars Returns to Theaters in 2027

Lucasfilm has made the speculation official, a new, fully remastered version of George Lucas’ original Star Wars is coming to theaters.

Fans who’ve been holding out hope for seeing the original version of Star Wars remastered or back on the big screen are getting some wonderful news this afternoon. While we knew Star Wars would be back in theaters as part of the big 50th anniversary celebration in April 2027, but today brings an update to the release timing AND what version we’ll be getting. As revealed on the official Star Wars site:

Part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration, a newly restored version of the classic Star Wars (1977) theatrical release — later renamed Star Wars: A New Hope — will play in theaters for a limited time.

Based on the wording here, they’re REALLY throwing it back. Meaning we’re getting the version before it was even A New Hope, or had “Episode IV” added to the opening crawl (people forget Lucas had been altering the film LONG before the Special Editions hit).

It’s definitely a neat thing and something no one has seen on the big screen in decades. While I’ve always been a fan of the Special Editions (yes I was watching Star Wars long before those as well), I’m thrilled at the chance to experience it the way those original audiences did.

So mark your calendars down for February 19, 2027 to see the original Star Wars back in theaters for a limited time. Now it’s time to start crossing those fingers for a physical release of the remastered version….
