Not only is a new Lord of the Rings movie in the works, but it’s being co-written by one of its biggest super fans.
Earlier today it was revealed that a new Lord of the Rings movie titled Shadow of the Past is being co-written by none other than Stephen Colbert! Colbert is well known for being a LOTR super fan, and it seems he’s been working on this story for over a year alongside his son, Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens (who worked on the original LOTR trilogy).
What will surely get fans attention, beyond Colbert’s involvement, is that this story sets out to correct one of the few errors in the LOTR trilogy: the fact that the Hobbits entire adventure with Tom Bombadil and the Old Forest is missing.
That’s right, Shadow of the Past is going to primarily deal with the events of Chapters III-VIII of The Lord of the Rings, aka the entire adventure with Tom Bombadil, the Old Forest and the Barrow-Wights.
The story is described as follows:
Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.
Little else is known for now about Shadow of the Past and no casting has been confirmed, though it would be amazing if Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd reprised their roles as Sam, Merry and Pippin.
What do you think of Shadow of the Past and its premise?
