Assassin’s Creed: Netflix Greenlights Live Action Series

The news is in, and the latest in the Assassin’s Creed franchise’s efforts to branch out into a multimedia empire has just been revealed! Following up on a 2020 announcement between the two companies, Ubisoft and Netflix have finally pressed the button on a live action series featuring the shadowy Assassins and their endless war against the expansive Knights Templar.

Details are scarce at the moment, but we do have confirmation of the show’s creators, showrunners, and executive producers, Roberto Patino (DMZ, Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming, The Killing). In a joint statement, Wiener and Patino had this to say about the project at a high level:

“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us. Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story – about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species, when those connections break. We’ve got an amazing team behind us with the folks at Ubisoft and our champions at Netflix, and we’re committed to creating something undeniable for fans all over the planet.”

Netflix adaptations tend to be hit or miss: for every Daredevil, there’s a Devil May Cry, and video game adaptations tend to run closer towards the latter. Furthermore, the generally poor reception of the Halo series does not inspire confidence in the showrunners. Even so, we’ll hold out for a trailer before making any real judgment calls.

The Assassin’s Creed series, in addition to Wiener and Patino, will also be executive produced by Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television, as well as Matt O’Toole.
