One of the highlights of James Gunn’s first full theatrical foray into his new DCU, Superman, apart from the incredible portrayal of the titular character and powerful emotional core of the film, was easily the work of Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Clark and Lois’s plucky young reporter friend who’s always got a witty remark and (inexplicably) a beautiful woman fawning over him nearby. Gisondo so perfectly embodied the role that ever since the film’s release, wheels have been placed into motion to develop a TV spinoff around him. Details have been scarce about this new DCU offering, however, until now.
Thanks to the Hollywood Reporter, we now know who will be helming this new project, as well as some details about the story beats of the first season!
Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, creators of the Netflix mockumentary American Vandal, have been tapped to lead the show, and will executive produce, showrun, and even write this new series, in which Skyler Gisondo will (of course) be reprising his role. The show will center around Jimmy and the rest of the Daily Planet newsroom, with the exception of Lois and Clark, and how they use their powers of investigative journalism to foil the plots of supervillains.
If that sounds awesome already, scoot back from the edge of your seat and check this out too: The first supervillain of season one will be the super-enhanced psychic primate himself, Gorilla Grodd! Though Grodd is a staple of the Flash’s rogues gallery, his antics often cross over between many different DC heroes, and has been a popular addition to DC properties for years now, from the Arrowverse to the Harley Quinn show.
Details are scarce beyond this for what sort of surprises are in store for us, but if the juvenile satire of American Vandal is anything to start from, we’ll be in for a snappy, comedic time at any rate. Arrowverse Grodd was fond of targeting certain Leaders of the Free World, though, so maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get to see him update his plans for the modern day.
The Jimmy Olsen spinoff currently does not have a name or release date set in stone. James Gunn and Peter Safran will join the showrunners as executive producers, while Galen Vaisman will be overseeing on behalf of DC.
