After ending on a pretty big cliffhanger a couple months ago, Alien: Earth has officially been given the green light for a second season.
Thankfully, the intriguing world of Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth will continue with a second season, with production slated to begin in 2026 (presumably with a 2027 release). The announcement comes on the heels of Hawley signing a new overall deal between FX and Disney Entertainment television.
John Landgraf, chairman of FX, had this to say on the news:
“It has been our great privilege to work with Noah for more than a decade on some of FX’s best and biggest shows, and we are thrilled to extend our partnership well into the future. Noah never stops surprising us with truly original stories— and his unique ability to bring them to vibrant life as a director and producer as well as writer makes him extraordinary. We can’t wait to get to work on the next season of ‘Alien: Earth,’ as well as some equally exciting future projects in advanced development.”
Hawley himself also made a statement about the deal:
“I’m thrilled that this expanded deal opens the door to new opportunities across all of Disney Entertainment Television. FX has always supported bold, character-driven storytelling. From the very beginning with Fargo, they’ve encouraged me to take creative risks and follow the story wherever it leads. I’m grateful to continue exploring the world of ‘Alien: Earth’ alongside our partners, cast, and crew as we begin the next chapter.”
Alien: Earth was pretty damn great! I loved tuning into it week after week, but I can’t deny the finale left a bitter taste in my mouth. No, it’s not unusual for TV shows to use cliffhangers in finales to keep audiences engaged until the next season…but times aren’t what they used to be. There was a time when shows would be filming what came next while current seasons were ongoing; ensuring a steady cycle of consistent releases.
In the age of streaming, however, that’s far from the norm. Instead, fans have to wait for an indeterminate amount of time for a show to get a season renewal (if it wasn’t originally sold as a multi-season thing like Rings of Power, etc) before the creators even begin thinking about working on it. It’s WILD and the result are audiences having to wait at least two years before seeing what comes next. Hell, it’ll be THREE years between seasons of Star Wars: Ahsoka.
Anyway, with that in mind, the sheer number of dangling plot threads and outright cliffhangers (they literally have Yutani soldiers landing for war on their shores) made the Alien: Earth finale a bit of a letdown. If only because there was no telling when, or if, we’d get another season.
As such, I’m thrilled to see confirmation of a second season…I just hope any potential third season wouldn’t have the same issue. But enough about the grumblings of an old nerd; what do you hope to see out of Alien: Earth season 2?
