E3 2021 to Host Award Show to Close Out the Show

Next weekend, E3 will see it’s return after the pandemic forced it into a year-long absence. This year, the entire event is set to be virtual with some of the gaming industry’s best showing off their upcoming games.

To close out the virtual 3-day event, E3 will be holding an awards show, honoring the best games revealed at the event. They’ve partnered with editors from IGN, Gamespot, GamesRadar+, and PCGamer to select E3 award winners.

The results will be announced on Tuesday, June 15 in a live broadcast hosted by Greg Miller, Jacki Jing and Alex “Goldenboy” Mendez. The broadcast will also feature new and upcoming game reveals, publisher press conferences, developer interviews, panel discussions and much more.

“For this year’s event, we are collaborating with editors at some of the world’s leading video game media outlets to create the Official E3 2021 Awards Show, recognizing the show’s most anticipated games,” said Stanley Pierre-Louis, President & CEO of the ESA. “The broadcast is going to be packed with exciting announcements and reveals, and celebrating innovative publishers and developers is an ideal way to close E3 2021.”

Traditionally, the in-person version of E3 would consist of every media outlet awarding a variety of developers with their Best in Show awards. It’s nice that E3 is bringing back some semblance of that. It’s also cool that developers get to be honored on a larger stage and viewers will see what awards they won at the event.

However, by just going with big name media brands, it runs the risk of smaller indie titles going unrecognized and larger AAA titles reaping all the awards. I just want to see all games get a fair shake and not a Best Indie Game award tossed in the direction of a smaller game almost like an afterthought.

What I think they should do is nominate awards and then allow the fans to decide who wins the top awards. That’s exactly what we did and our E3 2019 Best in Show went to Lost Words: Beyond the Page by Sketchbook Games, with games like DOOM Eternal and Dying Light 2 also nominated.

While again I think it’s a great idea to host an awards ceremony for E3 2021, I would just like to see all games represented.
