Final Fantasy XVI Gets a New Trailer and Summer 2023 Launch Window

At long last, Sony’s State of Play finally gave players a new look at Final Fantasy XVI, showing off new story and epic gameplay.

After months of waiting, Final Fantasy fans finally got another taste of the 16th installment in the franchise with a brand new trailer. The latest Final Fantasy XVI trailer features a few story elements, gameplay, but more importantly it features epic battles with the gods of this world, The Eikons.

Gods have always been a major part of Final Fantasy. Since the first game, these epic monsters have been fought, befriended, and later wielded. However, in recent installments like Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XV, it seems as if Square Enix has been pushing the envelope on the legendary beings. In Final Fantasy XVI, it looks as if these characters will finally take center stage in epic battles that see us become Eikons.

What’s even more interesting is HOW players become Eikons. This trailer suggests that a force known as “Dominance” alters certain people and turns them into Eikons. The first Final Fantasy XVI trailer saw glimpses of this transformation, but this latest one actually reveals some of the humans that inevitably become the larger-than-life beings. Suffice to say, I can’t wait to learn which characters are which Eikons.

FINAL FANTASY XVI brings players into a world where Eikons are powerful and deadly creatures that reside within Dominants—a single man or woman who is blessed with the ability to call upon their dreaded power. The story follows Clive Rosfield, a young man dedicated to mastering the blade, who is dubbed the First Shield of Rosaria and tasked to guard his younger brother Joshua—the Dominant of the Phoenix. Unexpected events set Clive on a dark and dangerous road to revenge.

Final Fantasy XVI and its epic Eikons fighting system arrive on PlayStation 5 Summer 2023.
