New ‘One Piece Odyssey’ Dev Diary Reveals New Gameplay Details & Its Origin

Back in March, Bandai Namco announced that a new One Piece video game, One Piece Odyssey, was releasing this year. Since then, the millions of One Piece fans have clamored to learn more about the new, original adventure. Bandai Namco has now released a new Dev Diary video for One Piece Odyssey; taking fans behind-the-scenes to discover the pain-staking amount of detail that has gone in to make this the best One Piece game ever.

This Dev Diary is chock-full of really interesting nuggets of information. For one, it’s amazing that this game was halfway through development when One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 was launching. Obviously the game wouldn’t have featured many of the abilities debuted in the most recent manga, but a lot has happened in 5 years of development. It makes one wonder if there were any updates or added work done to include any newly-revealed abilities.

The Dev Diary also gave players a more in-depth look at travel and battle. Both of which involve each unique ability of the Straw Hat Pirates to overcome. It seems as if the development team put a lot of emphasis in allowing players to incorporate every single member of the crew, not just their favorites. Plus, I love how they adapted the classic turn-based style and adding in random events to make it fresh and interesting.

Finally, the One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary made sure to highlight the exceptional music heard throughout the trailers and videos to this point. Along with producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki and Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief for One Piece Ken Takano, the dev diary included composer Motoi Sakuraba who explained how excited he was to be part of this game and how he and his team incorporated rare and raw sounds. He even respectfully asked that we play the game with a high-quality speaker to truly appreciate the work done.

No release date has been announced yet for One Piece Odyssey, but it’s set to release in 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Bandai Namco will be part of One Piece Day on July 22 and 23. That may be when we finally learn when the game will release.
