Before Watchmen: Nite Owl/Dr. Manhattan Deluxe Edition wraps up the hardcover collections of the prequels to the critically acclaimed original graphic novel. It features all four issues of both the Nite Owl and Dr. Manhattan titles as well as the two issues of Moloch. This volume is a mixed bag for me, although the good ends up outweighing the mediocre.
DC Comics continues its release of a year's worth of Watchmen prequels with Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach Deluxe Edition. This hardcover collection contains issues one through six of the Comedian title and issues one through four of Rorschach. Both books were penned by Brian Azzarello with art provided by J.G. Jones for Comedian and Lee Bermejo for Rorschach.
All the single issues are out and now it's time to make way for the inevitable deluxe editions of the Before Watchmen titles. DC Comics quite possibly could sell more copies of these hardcover collections than they did the individual issues. After all, anyone who bought the singles are going to want to have them next to the Watchmen book on their library shelf. On top of that, there are plenty of people out there who put off buying the weekly titles because they were too hard to keep up with.
The controversial Before Watchmen event came to a close with the sixth and final issue of the Comedian's title. To say it ended the entire affair with a bang would be both accurate and an understatement. Just like everyone, I have my favorites and want to give them the praise they deserve.
I put off reviewing the December cover issues of the Before Watchmen event because two of the five issues never arrived. After waiting a few days, I decided to get a hold of DC and found out they had been delayed for some reason or another. Fans of the "Watchmen" prequels were no doubt disappointed to find that the latest entries in both the Silk Spectre and Comedian books weren't hitting shelves as scheduled. However, we did get the next chapters in Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, and the Minutemen's adventures.
Before Watchmen: Minutemen continues the prequel series with the same high-standards in story and artwork we've come to expect from the different creators involved. Every month, this specific title from the Before Watchmen event takes us deeper into the history of the costumed crime fighters. Whether fans of the original graphic novel want to admit it or not, Darwyn Cooke has successfully expanded the universe of Watchmen.
The Before Watchmen event continues to wow readers with the long-awaited first issue of Dr. Manhattan. It's a no-brainer that the luminescent blue superhero is the one most fans of the original graphic novel were anxious to set their eyes on. The debut chapter doesn't disappoint and sheds light on some of the events that took place in Alan Moore's best-selling book.
What is surely one of the most anticipated entries in the Before Watchmen event is now out. Before Watchmen: Rorschach Issue #1 kicks off the second wave in the prequel series. Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo deliver on all the hype.
Every title of the Before Watchmen event continues to impress me. It's amazing how so many writers and artists can maintain the excellent quality they do over so many storylines that ultimately intersect. Before Watchmen: Nite Owl Issue #2 continues the trend and gives us more compelling background on the characters we know and love.
