There are a few games that I was always jealous was stuck on Xbox, and Fable was one of them.
You won’t need to buy an Xbox, or what is considered an Xbox these days, to play the upcoming Fable. For the first time in franchise history the game will be releasing on PS5 the same day and time it releases for Xbox, Steam, and day one on Xbox Game Pass.
Coming in 16 years after the previous Fable III the new game is not entirely reboot, but a new story in the universe. The game will expand on the “dry British wit” which creates a playful, yet morally chaotic, adventure. The game will still embrace self-awareness by making fun of hero tropes and even the player.
Today we showcase an early narrative setup: the pursuit of a mysterious stranger who has frozen an entire village. In the game, you assume the role of hero – and your resulting journey winds through dark forests, picturesque villages and rolling fairytale countryside – blending fantasy, comedy, combat and consequence.
For the first time, Fable is going open world in Albion, instead of making it a backdrop. The world will participate in the story itself, offering side quests and adventures along your way. The cool thing is how the player actions will impact the world itself with everything from closed off dialogue options, to impacting the physical world and how it develops. Choices, big and small, will be remembered by the world.
Combat is built around a new style weaving philosophy, which allows players to fluidly blend melee, ranged, and magic to create their preferred fighting identity. Classic Fable creatures make a return, alongside new threats that fit the tone of a world balancing fairytale charm with modern action RPG depth.
The game has been delayed several times, but this time it feels like a for sure thing. Xbox has another event in a few months to showcase even more details of the game, and possibly a finalized release date. For now we just have to look forward to the Autumn window.
