Activision and Infinity Ward gave gamers a first look at DMZ, which is being described by developers as “the definitive Call of Duty extraction shooter experience.”
DMZ will release alongside Modern Warfare 4 on October 23 for XBOX Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Players will “deploy into a volatile living combat zone as an off-the-books asset tasked with recovering advanced military tech left in the wake of war.”
Joe Cecot, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director working on DMZ, described their approach deeper in an Xbox Wire blog post, likening their approach to the extraction shooter genre to the battle royale genre when they developed Warzone.
“For DMZ, we’ve been paying attention to the genre,” Cecot writes. “We try and play every different extraction shooter that comes out, or even games that are slightly similar, just to see what’s clicking with players, what feels good, what doesn’t feel good. I think one of the things in the original DMZ that we wanted but we couldn’t get to was meaningful player growth.”
You can read the deeper dive into how the DMZ Beta played into how they are shaping the game mode for launch in the blog post.
The DMZ first look comes a week after a deep dive into the Modern Warfare 4 campaign and multiplayer by Xbox.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the follow-up to Modern Warfare III (2023) that continues the story of Captain Price, thrusting players into a major world conflict along the border of North and South Korea.
