I know there’s a ton of hype around a lot of other titles revealed during PlayStation’s Summer Game Fest State of Play, but the title that stole my heart was Bancho The Chef.
Bancho the Chef focuses on the beloved sushi chef Bancho that you build your business with in Dave the Diver. The game is a mix of cooking sim, RPG, and adventure that is set in 2004, 19 years before the events of Dave the Diver. The title also shifts from pixel art to 3D.
Jaeho Hwang, Director at developer MINTROCKET, said in a blog post on the PlayStation website that Bancho has ranked first among fans and “is one of the most-cosplayed characters we see whenever we go to gaming events.”
Bancho the Chef “tells the story of Bancho’s growth as he travels across Japan, Korea, China, and other Asian regions, learning cuisine from master chefs in each local,” Hwang wrote.
You’ll still be catching fish and petting cats, but you’ll also be the one cooking up the dishes you will serve to customers. As Bancho, you’ll raise the reputation of the restaurants in each region and learn local techniques to get you to the master status we glimpsed in the future.
The visual upgrade to 3D was necessary for developers to showcase the finer details of cooking.

Players using the DualSense controller will get a more tactile experience.
“We’re fully leveraging DualSense wireless controller’s features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and even the gyro sensor, to recreate the textures and sensations of cooking,” Hwang wrote. “For instance, when slicing fish, you can feel the contact between knife and cutting board through haptic feedback. When cracking an egg, the adaptive triggers and the controller’s built-in speaker work together to make it feel as if you’re handling the ingredient yourself. And when washing dishes, we’ve used DualSense wireless controller’s touchpad to recreate the tactile sense of scrubbing a plate by hand.”

Bancho the Chef is available to wishlist now on Steam and PlayStation.
