Get Jump-Scared With a Surprise New State of Decay Trailer | Watch the Official Gameplay Reveal

The Xbox 2026 Showcase came out swinging with start-to-finish trailers for all sorts of old favorites and new intrigues alike, but a standout among them was the reveal that State of Decay 3 had not, in fact, been forgotten about. This year’s Summer Game Fest showcase gave us an extended look at the latest in Undead Labs’ zombie survival sim, long a sleeper hit in the Xbox catalog:

The trailer looks to show the game retaining most of its core features of base building and tending to your survivors, but the combat sections look entirely refined. One major criticism of the State of Decay games prior was always the clunky combat. This was largely rectified in the sequel, but State of Decay 3 looks to be amping up the responsiveness of the action to levels that were, at some points, evoking the pace and excitement of zombie-slaying masterpiece Left 4 Dead.

State of Decay and its sequel were surprisingly robust zombie games in their time, and while there’s still a lot left to be seen if the third can stack up, there’s also quite a bit of time left to see it. State of Decay 3 is currently scheduled for a vague 2027 release date, with a Beta soon to come that players can sign up for now.

Anyone who can’t wait for more info to sink their infected teeth into, Xbox Wire released an interview with Undead Labs Creative Director Kevin Patzelt that gets into a lot of the meat of what we can expect from the game when it releases. Notable takeaways are the inclusion of the “Plague Nest,” an evolution of the Plague Hearts of State of Decay 2 that would endlessly spawn zombies. According to Patzelt, the Nests are more than just a background threat:

Think of it as an enemy with its own plans. We spent a lot of time thinking through what it does, how it works, and how it reacts to what actions the players take. These are dynamic sources or hubs of enemy encounters that players can go in and destroy, even if only for a little while.

There’s a lot more where that came from, including news about the size of the map, cooperative gameplay loop, and the inclusion of two whole buttons for melee combat, so be sure to check that out at the link above too. Everyone else, stay on the lookout next year for more zombie-filled slayfests to come!
