Fresh on the heels of the news that Borderlands 4 will release earlier than previously announced, we got a dive into gameplay courtesy of Sony, Gearbox and 2K.
Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12, 2025 on PlayStation5 console, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will release on Nintendo Switch later this year. They also dropped a gameplay trailer after the 20-minute showcase.
In the State of Play, we visit the planet Kairos and met two of the game’s four Vault Hunters: Vex the Siren and Rafa the Exo-Solider. We also got a look at Amon and Harlowe in some stills released by Gearbox, and learned that some favorites like Claptrap, Moxxi and Zane will return along with new dynamic characters to the universe.
Developers also touted the game’s “most advanced skill tree system in a Borderlands game to-date” in a news release.
The game will also feature an updated gear system that is poised to give gamers the “wildest loot chase ever,” including weapons from 8 new and returning manufacturers, a Licensed Parts system, enhancements to gear slots to augment weapons based on their manufacturer, and more.
Across the vast and seamlessly connected planet of Kairos, players will face the oppressive Timekeeper. For thousands of years, he kept the planet hidden, controlling its inhabitants with cybernetic implants called Bolts and an army of synthetic soldiers known as The Order. Players will travel across the planet where they’ll encounter new and returning characters, creatures and inhabitants to battle, and unique factions spread across four distinct regions that seek freedom from the tyranny of the Timekeeper. The friends discovered along the way will be recruited by players to their cause while enemies will experience first-hand the arsenal of weapons and abilities wielded by the Vault Hunters.
