Marvel’s Wolverine SDCC | Story Trailer, Reveals & More!

Marvel’s Wolverine hosted one of the first major Hall H panels of this year’s San Diego Comic Con and started off swinging with the release of a brand new story trailer. The trailer gave us some new looks at key characters, further reveals of the game’s plot and some more worldbuilding for Insomniac’s Marvel Universe. Check out the trailer below before we delve into all the gory details!

Trailer Reveals

The first major intriguing reveal in the trailer is Logan with yellow eyes; it’s unclear what’s caused this, but it appears to put him in a more feral state. This could be an artistic choice; the character is known for his iconic “Berserker Rage”, so perhaps this version has the eye change as a result of this, but it seems more likely this is part of a larger sinister plot.

A superhero is only as good as their supervillains, and Wolverine and the X-Men have crossed paths plenty over their decades-spanning Uncanny adventures. This teaser showed us a few we’ve seen before with some new looks in fresh footage, like Sabertooth, the Hand, Lady Deathstrike, Omega Red, and a very brief glimpse at Mystique in action. Sabertooth can be seen in a more comic-accurate getup, and Lady Deathstrike, a murderous ex-flame of Logan’s in the comics, seems to be wielding an enchanted sword to pair with her deadly claws.

But we’ve seen a couple of characters that we’re yet to definitively identify, though one is a face that will be familiar to gamers, the unmistakable likeness of Troy Baker, who previously played Simon Krieger in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Baker seems to be playing Nathan Essex aka Mr Sinister; Wolverine seems to rescue him from Trask early on. Essex runs Team X in the prequel comic, the task force that Wolverine, Sabertooth, Mystique and Sunfire are part of at the start of the game to protect mutants.

Additionally, a human scientist who could be Bolivar Trask, since Trask is a big part of this game, but not sporting the moustache he usually appears with in previous incarnations. The masked villain who seems to appear in the Tokyo section of the game could be Ogun, a master ninja and former mentor to Wolverine who uses dark magic and telepathy to possess bodies.

Jean, evidently a major supporting character in the game, is not an X-Man yet; they don’t exist in this universe so far. But she is sporting her own superhero-esque outfit that still strikes something of an X. This game seems to be further developing a potential romance with Jean, something that will go beyond the comics’ typical unrequited dynamic.

What Else Happened at the Panel?

Some fresh stills of Team X were revealed:

If you love superheroes, you probably love superhero suits, and the panel confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel Tōkon Fighting Souls will be crossing over, with the character default looks in either game being skins for the other.

Also released is the single Logan by David Fleming, the composer for this game and last year’s Superman. You can listen to the single here:

Finally, we got some great stills of the game that continue to show us Wolverine being the best he is at what he does.
