Metal Gear Solid Movie Re(Re)Announced Officially, Nearly 10 Years Later

Kept you waiting, huh? Well wait longer.

The original announcement of this movie still had Kojima working at Konami with the franchise. Now we’ve had two Death Stranding titles, a MGS3 remake, and other projects and it still… is just being announced.

Revealed in 2018, after several failed reveals before it, a Metal Gear Solid movie was in the works by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who seemed to be a pretty big fan of the franchise. He explained key aspects of the games and even had Kojima excited to see what would come of it. He was known for the big blockbuster Kong Skull Island at the time. Then 2018 ended, and we heard nothing else.

Today the movie is, officially, announced (again) by Sony Pictures and the director has changed to Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. They of course directed the most recent Final Destination.

“Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life,” the pair said.

There is no word if Oscar Isaac is still attached to the film or not. He was a fan favorite pick to take part in the film, and was pretty transparent about the writing up through 2022 when an original script was pushed back on. Then director, Vogt-Roberts, even had the team completely rewrite the script to be more faithful to the game and the fans, pushing back heavily on the Sony executives.

So it’s a bit alarming, in a sense, that the team that was dedicated to the franchise, and were actual fans of the series, have all been swept out with this new “official” announcement. Sony did recently suggest a push for more medium friendly productions, and has an upcoming Resident Evil film as well. They also hinted at a Kojima partnered production by showing the Sony studios during Kojima’s previous game announcement. Kojima also has several Death Stranding projects in the works, including an anime series for Disney+.

With the announcement, no production schedule was released. The is also no confirmation if scripts already in the works, or cast tied to the production, will also be used.
