‘Disgaea 7 Complete’ is Worth Playing, If You’re Patient With It – Review

Disgaea 7 Complete is a fun game to play, provided you have the patience for it.

Having been given the opportunity to check out Disgaea 7 Complete ahead of its recent release for Nintendo Switch 2, I approached the game with curiosity. Tactical RPG games are relatively new to me, my only real experience prior to this game being Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Disgaea 7 Complete

Developer: Nippon Ichi Software

Platform: Nintendo Switch 2

Release Date: October 10, 2025

For this review I played the Nintendo Switch 2 release of the game.

The Story

The story follows Fuji, a demon warrior, and Pirilika, a young girl obsessed with the idea of bushido and the honorable warriors of ancient times. The pair reluctantly team up to fight their way through the netherworld of Hinomoto to overthrow the tyrants bleeding the land dry.

A lot of the dialogue segments between battles involves Fuji and Pirilika butting heads, as the two are complete opposites. I had a lot of fun especially watching Pirilika realize she is in way over her head.

The Gameplay

The story is progressed by fighting and clearing battle levels. For the most part these consist of arranging your forces and strategically overcoming obstacles in order to win the battle and clear the level. Sometimes this can be as straightforward as defeating a series of enemies in a straight battle.

Other times the level will throw in a set of conditions that will complicate combat or otherwise have to be overcome. For instance, the enemies might be on an elevated stretch of land and the player will have to build a way to get up there to face them. Other times, there will be a boss encounter that can only be cleared if a certain move is used against them.

This is where Disgaea 7 Complete runs into some issues. The game seems easy enough to pick up, but upon reaching my very first boss encounter, it felt like I’d run straight into a brick wall. Aside from showing you what “ultimate attack” you need to use, the game otherwise doesn’t give any tips on how to get past the level, which seems strange since this is the first encounter of this kind in the game.

I’m sure a great deal of this can be chalked up to my relative experience with the tactical RPG genre, but it feels like this part of Disgaea 7 Complete could’ve been better explained. As it is, I feel like I’m muddling my way through and *maybe* I will stumble onto the correct solution that will clear the level.

On the positive side, I did enjoy how Disgaea 7 Complete operates from a hub area where upgrades and equipment can be purchased between battles. I further liked how certain items could only be purchased after reaching a certain level. That provided a certain motivation to get further in the game so I could unlock those features.

Worth Playing, Patience is a Must

All of this is to say that Disgaea 7 Complete is worth checking out, but patience is a must. Figuring out the correct way to get through certain levels can take a lot of time, but once you make the connection, it’s a fun experience.

If you want a challenge, check this game out, though I don’t think I would recommend it for beginners to the tactical RPG genre.

Final Thoughts

Disgaea 7 Complete provides a fun, if mixed experience for those wanting to check it out. The gameplay is fun enough, but some of the levels provide almost too much challenge, particularly for those unfamiliar with the tactical RPG genre. It'll be fun for some, but probably shouldn't be taken on by a beginner to the genre.
