Valve Confirms Steam Controller Release Date And Price

The next generation of the Steam controller is coming sooner than you think, but a little more costly than expected too.

Valve broke the internet a while ago by announcing a new Steam Machine was heading our way. A console like Steam Deck that will support PC games, and run off Steam OS, which got us rather excited. However due to constraints with memory and graphics cards, it seems the timeline to see it got pushed around a bit.

That’s the bad news, the good news is that the controller they showed off with it is coming soon. The new Steam Controller will be heading our way on May 4th, and it will come in at $99. That’s a pretty big sticker price for a controller, and about $25 higher than a PS5 controller.

However what it offers is rather cool. The controller is more aligned with the “pro” versions of Xbox and PlayStation controllers with interchangable parts, and an easy repair route if anything breaks. The controller has magnetic thumbsticks, full inputs for Steam libraries (including touchpads similar to Steam Deck), 4 haptic motors, a battery boasting 3 hours of game time, and a new “Steam Puck” for low latency wireless connections and magnetic charging cord.

The controller will feature the ability to use the touchpads for gaming, along with motion sensing abilities. Also embedded in the controller is a Steam home button, and a quick access button to see friends and chats. The controller works where ever steam is available and is fully customizable.

Also interesting is the note that the controller is fully functional with the upcoming Steam Machine, which means it can auto wake it from sleep and connects instantly.

You can find more details on the Valve page.
