Sony’s next Spider-Man spin-off, Kraven the Hunter, is bringing its cast together quickly. This afternoon, they’ve added Ariana DeBose to the growing ensemble.
Mere days after her historic win at the SAG Awards this weekend, Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) has been cast alongside Aaron Taylor Johnson in Kraven the Hunter. Deadline scooped the report while also adding that DeBose is set to play the character of Calypso.
If you’re not as familiar with the comics, Calypso is a Voodoo priestess who taps into the more magical side of things. As far as her relationship with Kraven himself, Calypso has been both partner and (sometimes) love interest. She’s also been a primary antagonist to Spider-Man in the past, even bewitching the Lizard and nearly managing to kill the hero.
If they’re really trying to take Kraven down the more anti-hero path (as they seem to be trying with Morbius), I’m curious to see what role Calypso might play in the film…
Kraven the Hunter is currently set to hit theaters on January 13, 2023.
