Jurassic World Rebirth | 4K Ultra HD Review

Gareth Edwards’ entry into the Jurassic franchise hits physical media this week and brings excellent image clarity to its engaging dino action.

If you missed out on Jurassic World Rebirth in theaters, or simply been waiting to get your hands on a physical release to enjoy it at home, this is your week! Universal was kind enough to shoot me an early copy of the 4K disc, so let’s talk about whether or not it’s worth picking up!

When Jurassic World Rebirth hit theaters, I was a tad mixed on it. You can check out my full review, but suffice it to say while I loved the dinosaur action (some of the best in the franchise), something felt off. It’s no secret I’m a big Jurassic fan and have enjoyed ALL the movies to various degrees, so even if I wasn’t as woohoo as I’d hoped on that first viewing, I was eager to watch it again, if for nothing else than the solid action beats.

By and large, I’d say my initial thoughts on the film remain the same upon a second viewing. I will say, however, the pacing definitely felt smoother this time around. There’s still a bit too much exposition on the front end (that inexplicably repeats itself), but the characterizations and interactions between everyone seemed more engaging this time around.

Even better, the action sequences remain just as tense and seat-gripping. Even knowing how things work out, I was hooked and found my heart pounding. It’s not something all of the sequels have been able to successfully do—on repeat viewings—and considering how much I loved the action in this film, I’m glad to see it retains that element. Keeping the thrills upon multiple viewings is a key factor in the longevity of these flicks, and Rebirth manages to do it pretty handily.

Sight & Sound

On the technical side of things this 4K release doesn’t skimp on the goods. The picture is razor sharp, with excellent color contrast. The blacks are super deep without crushing, and allows everything happening on the screen to really stand out. During the final act, where most of the action takes place at night, I was able to make out minute details in the background I hadn’t even been able to see in theaters.

It’s pretty great, and it makes the creature designs/VFX (which I really loved), look better than ever. It might not have the same gravitas as seeing these dinos on the big screen, but it’s pretty damn close.

On the sound side of things, the Dolby Atmos track is similarly solid/impressive. It allows the softer background noises to shine through, making the setting feel more alive and immersive, while keeping the dialog a priority. You won’t be grabbing the volume to change things up and down between the action and talking scenes.

There’s quite a bit to go through in the special features, which is always nice to see. Good extras feels like a lost art these days, even on the bigger blockbusters, but there’s plenty of goodies for fans to enjoy. The little making of featurettes offer some neat insight into how some of the best sequences came together, though they don’t feel like they go quite as deep as I would have liked.

Between a fun movie that manages to retain its thrills upon multiple viewings, crystal sharp image, and oodles of bonus features, the Jurassic World Rebirth 4K Ultra HD release offers plenty of bang for your buck.
